JORDAN'S PRINCIPLE SERVICES  

Jordan's Principle is a child-first and needs-based principle used in Canada to ensure that First Nations children (under the age of majority; 0 – 18) living on and off reserve have equitable access to all government funded public services.

Program Update

In February 2025, Jordan’s Principle (Indigenous Services Canada) made changes to their application guidelines. These changes have been made to ensure the long-term sustainability of the program and follow the Jordan’s Principle mandate – to support First Nations children who face barriers to access products, services and supports.

What do the program changes mean for WDN Members who access Jordan's Principle or who may need to in the future?

As part of the new guidelines, applications submitted to Jordan’s Principle must meet certain criteria. Our staff will continue to work diligently to support families and individuals with their applications to the program.

Common Jordan's Principle Requests

Every child is unique and has a different set of needs. 

Health - Medical Assessment, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Medical Respite, Speech therapy and more.  Dental/prescriptions/glasses not covered by NHIB

Medical Equipment – such as wheelchairs, hearing aids and adaptive strollers, walkers, etc.

Overall Wellbeing

Social Needs -  Necessities of life such as food security and shelter.

Mental Health Programs - mental health therapy, counselling, trauma informed support.

Educational Needs - Assisted Technology, tutoring
